Councilwoman Shirley Gonzalez was elected District 5 Councilmember on June 2013. She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She spent most of her youth around her family-owned business, Bill’s Pawn Shop and Jewelry Store which was established in 1960 and located on S Zarzamora between Buena Vista and W Commerce. Her affection for District five holds true today, as she resides with her husband, Kevin Barton, a retired Chief Master Sergeant and her sons Ian and Zachary.
Shirley attended Ursuline Academy and went on to earn both a Bachelor and Master’s degree from the School of Business at St. Mary’s University. She has been working in her family-owned business for 20 years and enjoys being a strong corporate leader by supporting educational institutions and organizations that are making a difference in our neighborhood.
Shirley is active and committed to improving the lives of the community members that she serves–she sits on several boards including MPO, Committee of Six, San Antonio Housing, Community Action Advisory, Transportation, Technology and Utilities Committee, Criminal Justice, Public Safety and Services Committee and Audit as appointed by Mayor Ivy Taylor and she is also the Liaison for Cesar Chavez March.
